Urmston is where our address is, and it shows in how well we know it. The town centre around the market precinct and Flixton Road has a good mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces mixed with later infill, many with the original narrow plots and rear-yard access that make certain jobs — flue routing, external condensate runs, cylinder deliveries — genuinely easier to plan when you already know which streets have back-alley access and which don't.

Church Road and the streets fanning out from it towards Abbotsfield Park are a slightly later mix, mostly interwar semis and some larger detached houses, many extended over the decades with kitchen and utility additions that have changed the original heating layout without anyone updating the pipe sizing to suit. It's common on these jobs to find a radiator added to a rear extension years ago, fed off an undersized branch that was fine for the original three-bed layout but struggles once a fourth or fifth radiator gets added to the same run.

The Charlestown estate, built mostly in the postwar decades, is a different profile again — a larger number of semi-detached and short-terrace council-built houses, many now privately owned, with more uniform original heating installations than the Victorian streets nearer the centre. Boiler swaps here are usually more straightforward because the systems tend to be simpler and more consistent, though we still see plenty of properties where a boiler has been replaced without anyone re-checking whether the original radiators and pipework are still a sensible match.

Further out towards Flixton and the edge of Urmston, near Urmston Park and the railway line, the housing opens out into larger 1930s and postwar detached properties with bigger gardens and, often, bigger heating demands — these are the jobs where we're more likely to be discussing a system boiler and cylinder rather than a straightforward combi, simply because the properties have more bathrooms and higher simultaneous hot water use.
